Course content

In a two-part course series on psychosomatic osteopathy with Torsten Liem, effective practical approaches to the treatment of complex complaints and dysfunctional soma-physiological-experiential context patterns in the clinical-osteopathic setting are taught.

The main aim of this two-part course series is to teach integral, practice-relevant diagnostic and treatment approaches and new perspectives in the clinical application of osteopathy. On the one hand, advanced approaches and techniques for osteopathy are offered, which expand the clinical framework and the “toolbox” of the practicing osteopath. On the other hand, new perspectives, principles and models make it possible to identify and link further clinically relevant factors in relation to health and allostasis that have not previously been considered. This is why we do not speak of a primary somatic dysfunction, but of soma-physiology-experience-context dysfunction patterns, which are taken into account in the diagnosis. We also consider which resources maintain the existing balance and which changes in the patient are possible with which osteopathic approaches at a certain point in time.

The entire course series is designed to enhance and expand diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to challenges and complaints encountered in practice. These include cognitive, limbic, neurovegetative, immunological, biochemical, homeostatic and allostatic processes, consideration of sensorimotor, vital, emotional, mental and spiritual components of consciousness, new and expanded palpatory approaches, the inclusion of the biographical life path and the lines of development for clinically relevant osteopathic approaches, the consideration of multimodal and multidimensional resources that can be activated during treatment, the ability to co-regulate patients in order to accompany them into a dynamic state of balance and flow.

Between the two parts of the course, Basic 1 and 2, there will be approximately 30 minutes of small group work every two weeks.

– Diagnostics soma-physiology-experience-context-dynamics
– Therapeutic relationship
– Palpation of somatic dysfunction and the ANS
– Stabilization work in the osteopathic setting
– Dynamic resource organization and co-regulation
– Indications and contraindications
– 15-step Multimodal Bifocal Integration®
– Right-left balance and bilateral stimulation
– Resolving dysfunctional soma-physiology-experience-context patterns with breathing techniques
– Myofascial vibration
– Chronic pain: Treatment protocol basic 1
– Posture
– Emotional fasciae and corticolimbic networks
– Reflexes
– Interoception
– Regulation of the ANS
– Treatment of the insula and all interactions
– Specific vagus techniques

Learning outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  1. Diagnostics soma-physiology-experience-context-dysfunction pattern:
    • To develop the ability to recognize and understand the complex interplay of soma-physiology-experience-context-dynamics in patient dysfunctions and to derive diagnostic hypotheses.
  2. Therapeutic relationships:
    • Promote effective therapeutic relationships through improved communication and understanding of patient needs and contexts.
    • Apply effective and empathetic communication techniques to strengthen the therapeutic relationship.
  3. Diagnostic skills for the ANS:
    • Application of refined techniques to assess the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
    • Identify and evaluate ANS dysfunction by history, inspection and palpation
  4. Stabilization techniques:
    • Apply patient stabilization techniques in the osteopathic setting.
    • Recognize and assess the effect of stabilization measures on the well-being and health of patients.
  5. Dynamic resource organization and co-regulation:
    • Identify dynamic resource organization of patients and integrate new ones.
    • Apply co-regulation techniques to help patients achieve a state of dynamic balance and flow.
  6. Indications and contraindications
    • Know the indications and contraindications for various osteopathic techniques and treatment approaches and apply them correctly.
    • Ensure patient safety by taking contraindications into account.
  7. Diagnosis and treatment of posture
    • Analyze posture from a PSO perspective and plan and implement corrective measures.
    • Understand the influence of posture on different systems.
  8. Reflexes, using the example of the ATNR in chronic stress experience
    • Recognize reflexes and use their significance for osteopathic treatment.
    • Integrate reflex work into the overall treatment plan.
  9. 15-step Multimodal Bifocal Integration®
    • Understand the 15 steps of Multimodal Bifocal Integration® and put them into practice.
    • Adapt the technology to the individual needs of the patient.
  10. Myofascial vibration
    • Learn the principles and techniques of myofascial vibration and integrate them into the treatment.
  11. Right-left balance techniques:
    • Learn methods for restoring right-left balance and applying bilateral stimulation.
    • Analyze the effects of these techniques on the neurological and physiological balance of patients.
  12. Breathing techniques to resolve dysfunctional soma-physiology-experience-context patterns:
    • Application of specific breathing techniques to release the soma-physiology-experience-context dynamic.

o Integrate breathing techniques in relation to different body systems into the overall treatment process.

  1. Chronic pain: Treatment protocol basic 1
    • Understanding the pathophysiology of pain.

o Develop effective strategies for the treatment and management of patients with chronic pain.

  1. Emotional fasciae and corticolimbic networks
    1. Understanding the connection between emotional fascia and corticolimbic networks.
    2. Develop and apply therapeutic approaches to treat these relationships.
  2. Interoception
    1. Understand the importance of interoception for health and treatment interactions.
    2. Apply techniques to improve interoception in patients.
  1. Treatment of the insula and all interactions
    1. Understand and apply special techniques for treating the insula and its interactions.
    2. Understand the therapeutic effect of these techniques on the course of treatment.
  1. Specific vagus techniques
    1. Understand and apply specific techniques to stimulate and regulate the vagus nerve.
    2. Observe and analyze the effects of vagus techniques on the autonomic nervous system interoception and general health.
  1. Multimodal sensory integration:
    1. Integrate multimodal sensory information into diagnostics and treatment to improve clinical outcomes.
  1. Evolutionary and ontogenetic perspectives:
    • Understanding and applying evolutionary and ontogenetic perspectives in a clinical context as a basis for treatment approaches.

This comprehensive workshop aims to equip osteopaths with the skills and knowledge to approach complex clinical presentations more effectively and promote a holistic and integrative approach to patient care.
